Rethink Development is a partnership between Outreach Canada and Partners Trust International Church in Burundi, East Africa. Our purpose is to inspire and equip the church to fulfill its God-given mandate in helping communities experience sustainable development, and the country be transformed, for the glory of God.

The church is omnipresent in Burundi; it is one of those African countries where the Christian faith has become part of the fabric of the society – both urban and rural. The growth of the church in sub-Saharan Africa in the last 30 years is one of the most remarkable in Church history! One Pentecostal denomination in Burundi has over a million members (the population of the country is 12 million). The church is such a key player in every way in the very poor country, and we have been helping leaders to be more effective in helping their communities holistically.
But the specific spiritual needs of pastors have not been on our radar … until now.

Outreach Canada’s work in Burundi, East Africa, is made possible by our official partnership with Partners Trust International Church. We have titled our partnership, Rethink Development, and have had a particular focus on building the capacity of Christians involved in community development work.
I continue to be inspired by the many committed Burundian leaders who pour out their lives in serving in such a challenging environment. God is at work through the church in such practical and inspirational ways, and we are privileged to play a small but significant role in seeing many of these leaders better equipped in their important work.

Barry Whatley descibes a capacity building project for Christian development practitioners in the african nation of Burundi, which will provide training, practical research, and regular inspiration for Burundian Christian development organisations and churches.
