Broken hearted. Shattered dreams. Hopes that are now just bitter empty promises.
That might describe how you feel today. It certainly only begins to capture how the followers of Jesus must have felt as they woke exhausted on the Sunday morning after the execution of the man they believed to be their Messiah on a cruel Roman cross.
Then the impossible happened...death transformed into life. The tomb was not just empty, Jesus walked among them. Talked with them. Ate with them. Touched them. Not just one or two of His followers, but dozens, hundreds even. At different locations and times. This is not some fabrication or desperate delusion.
The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus are events that cannot be ignored. Even a brief study of the evidence today will show any honest enquirer that much.
The question is the same today as it was 2000 years ago. What does it matter to me? What am I going to do with the empty tomb?
There were people in the days and weeks after that first Easter that were well aware of what had happened. There was enough evidence for them to believe. None of this happened in secret. It was as public as could be.
The problem is not with the veracity of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Why didn't everyone turn and follow Jesus? Perhaps the better thing to ask is, am I ready to follow Jesus? Will I believe that power of God's love is enough to overcome darkness, doubt and death? Will I accept the claims of Jesus to be "The Way, The Truth, and The Life"? Will I put my life in His hands and go where ever He may lead?
The choice was no easier for those who witnessed Jesus with their own eyes and ears than it is for us today.
The empty tomb declares "Christ is Risen". Are you ready to respond, "He is risen, indeed!"
