Disciple Making Movements Lexicon

• What we measure: 

  • Baptism:  

    • When a person who repents of sin and professes faith in Jesus chooses to be submerged in water to symbolize their identification with Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection and their death to sin and new life in him.  

  • Disciples:  

    • A person who is learning to hear from God, obey his commands, and share them with others. 

  • Church:  

    • A group of believers who are gathering to love God, love others and multiply disciples with Jesus in their midst as King.  

  • UUPG & UPG Segments:  

    • UUPG is a people group that is not currently being engaged by any followers of Jesus. There are no Christians or Churches among those people. UPG is a people group that is being engaged by followers of Jesus, but still is considered unreached due to the low number of believers and churches within the people group. 

• What is CPM/DMM Movement Approach? 

  • PRINCIPLE 1 

    • There is awareness that only God can start movements, but disciples can follow biblical principles to pray, plant, and water the seeds that can lead to a book of Acts type multiplying movement(s).  

  • PRINCIPLE 2 

    • The focus is to make every follower of Christ a reproducing disciple rather than merely a convert. 

  • PRINCIPLE 3 

    • Patterns create frequent and regular accountability for both obeying what the Lord is speaking to each person and for them to pass it on to others in a loving environment. This requires a participative small-group approach. 

  • PRINCIPLE 4 

    • Each disciple is equipped in comprehensive ways (such as interpreting and applying Scripture, a well-rounded prayer life, functioning as a part of the larger Body of Christ, and responding well to persecution/suffering) in order that they might function not merely as consumers, but as active agents of Kingdom advance. 

  • PRINCIPLE 5 

    • Each disciple is given a vision both for reaching their relational network and for extending the Kingdom to the ends of the earth with a prioritization on the darkest places (with a “no place left” mentality). They are equipped to be able to minister and partner with others in the Body of Christ in both of these environments. 

  • PRINCIPLE 6 

    Reproducing churches are intentionally formed as a part of the multiplying disciple’s process. The intent in CPM/DMM approaches is that 1) disciples, 2) churches, 3) leaders and 4) movements can multiply endlessly by the power of the Spirit. 

  • PRINCIPLE 7 

    Emphasis is not on the specific model of CPM/DMM used (e.g., T4T, DBS, Zume, 4 Fields, etc.) but on the underlying biblical principles of multiplying kingdom movements. 

• 3/3’s 

  A simple reproducible tool used to establish DNA in groups and churches. It serves as a guide for gathering time. 

• 4 Fields 

  A tool used to describe the Kingdom process of developing disciples, leaders, and churches from cultivation to reproduction. A model for multiplying Kingdom movements. 

• Accountability 

  Agreed upon; where people look out for others spiritual welfare, given permission to ask probing questions related to obedience to God’s Word.

• Addition 

  When we say addition in this context, we mean a gathering that is growing by attraction. Linear growth. 

• All Nations 

  The Father’s Heart is for every tribe, tongue, and nation. Ethnic groups not geopolitical nations. 

• Baptizer 

  A disciple who has baptized someone. 

• Catalyze 

  To start new Kingdom work. 

• City 2 City 

  Cross-pollinating and Collaborating (working & learning together) of disciples, leaders, and churches from one city to another. 

• City Team 

  A team of teams that is connecting, communicating, and collaborating in their city, and city to city, towards Gospel saturation, multiplication, and transformation. 

• Church  

  A group of believers who are gathering to love God, love others and multiply disciples with Jesus in their midst as King.  

• Coach 

  Someone that is helping you accomplish a specific goal. The specific development of a skill.  

• Connecting, Communicating, Collaborating (3C’s) 

  Developing relationships. Working together as one, John 17:23. Share information.  

• CPM 

  Church Plant Movement. 

• DBS 

  Discovery Bible Study – simple, reproducible & participatory Bible study groups that are based on open ended questions that allow the Word of God and the Spirit of God to speak. 

• Disciple 

  A person who is learning to hear from God, obey his commands, and share them with others. 

• Disciple Maker 

  2 Tim 2:2  

  Patterns and principles passed down from one disciple to another. 

• DMM 

  Disciple Making Movement. See Movements.  

• Generational Discipleship 

  When disciples teach others who in turn will teach others which will create generations of disciples.  

• Gen Map 

  A tool used to help churches multiply and move towards health while deepening generational growth.  

• Great Collaboration

• Harvest 

  Luke 10:2; those that are far from God that need to hear the Good News.  

• House Church 

  A group of believers who are gathering in a home together to love God, love others and multiply disciples with Jesus in their midst as King. See Simple Church. 

• HUB 

  A physical location where movement leaders come together for a time of learning, strategy development, prayer, and encouragement. To be sent back out to the mission field.  

• Institutionalized 

  When an individual or organization exists for its own self-preservation. Kingdom movements are built on sacrifice for the greater good. “Die to multiply” See Romans 12:1-3 and John 12:24. 

• Leader 

  Someone who is going somewhere and has someone following them. A servant and influencer. 

• Legacy 

  The prevailing model, or historical form of church that has been conventional (the norm) in Western culture. 

• MAWL 

  Model, Assist, Watch, Launch or Leave  

• Mentor 

  An experienced and trusted advisor that is ongoing life to life. Wholistic life development. 

• Ministry Map (Relationship Map; Oikos Map) 

  One’s circle of influence; Diagram of a plan to reach family, coworkers, friends through prayer and sharing the Good News.  

• Model Zone 

  A location or place where the disciple making process is modeled. 

• Movements 

  CPM = Church Planting movement - A rapid and multiplicative increase of indigenous churches planting churches within a given people group or population segment. David Garrison 

  DMM = Disciple Making Movement – rapid, immediately viral, multiplicative, indigenous movements, creating new disciples from lostness four generations deep on multiple strands. The direction of mobilization is from the harvest to the church. The focus is regeneration of the lost into disciples-makers. Dave Watson & Roy Moran 

• Multiplication 

  A biblical principle from Genesis to Revelation that spreads God’s Glory and covers the earth. (Exponential growth of the lives of Christ followers)  

• Network 

  Group or system of interconnected groups who are collaborating to advance the kingdom of God. A church of churches. 

• Network Leader 

  Steward (catalyst or shepherd) of a Network. 

• Person of Peace 

  Open to the Gospel and willing to learn and move and share with others. 

• Planter 

  An individual or team who plants (go) the Gospel, makes disciples (grow), gathers them in Churches/ teams and guides them to reproduce the process by establishing leaders. 

• Priesthood 

  Power and authority given to all believers to act in all things necessary for the salvation of others. 

• Reproducible 

  Able to reproduce to any age, gender, contact, culture. 

• Seed 

  The gospel. 

• Seed Sower 

  Mark 4:1-20 Referring to someone who is competently and confidently sharing or sowing the Gospel. 

• Simple Church 

  A group of believers who are gathering to love God, love others and multiply disciples with Jesus in their midst as King.  

• Soil 

  Referring to people’s receptivity to the word of God. Taken from Jesus’ parable in Mark 4. 

• Spiritual Conversation 

  It involves sharing one’s personal experience of God. 

• Team 

  Two or more people who share the same vision or pursuit. 

• Timothy Map 

  A tool used for tracking generational growth of multiplying disciples to the first, second, third, fourth generations and beyond. 

• Training 

  Teaching in a way that results in knowing and obeying Jesus. Typically involves modeling by trainer/team and lots of iterative (repetitions) practice. 

• T4T 

  Training for trainers. A model for multiplying Kingdom movements. 

• Vision Casting 

  Communicating a preferred future (vision) and inviting people to participate and take ownership. 

• Zume 

  A training model for multiplying Kingdom movements.
